Meet Moniqua’

Moniqua’ Scott is a proud native of Lufkin, Texas, who is committed to restoring a government that truly represents every voice in our community—not just a select few.

After graduating from Texas A & M University with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and a Communication minor, she pursued her passion for justice at South Texas College of Law, where she honed her advocacy skills through mock trial competitions, legal clinics, and participation in law school organizations.

Moniqua’ served with dedication as an Assistant District Attorney in Harris and Montgomery Counties and as a Public Defender in Harris County, standing up for indigent Texans facing felony charges and fighting for fairness in every courtroom. Her diverse legal experience fuels her vision for vibrant communities where “We the People” means everyone has a stake and a voice in decisions that shape their lives.

Moniqua’ is fiercely dedicated to advancing justice, holding powerful interests accountable, and ensuring that local government empowers families, working people, and marginalized communities alike.

Beyond her professional life, Moniqua’ treasures time with her daughter, exploring new places, enjoying good food, attending her local church and expressing herself through music and dance.

Guided by the principle, “There should be nothing about us without us,” she is ready to bring her experience, passion, and resolve to the Texas House for District 15, making sure all voices are heard and respected.

Issues

  • I believe every voter, no matter the race or income, deserves fair representation and a voice that truly counts. Recent Republican redistricting efforts have undermined that principle by carving maps that dilute minority representation and weaken local control. I’m committed to fighting for a transparent, nonpartisan redistricting process that protects democracy and ensures every community has equal power at the ballot box.

  • Property taxes have become a major concern for Texas families struggling with rising costs and uneven relief efforts. I support responsible property tax reform that expands homestead exemptions and limits local increases while protecting funding for our schools, infrastructure, and public safety. Texans deserve both real relief and thriving communities that reflect our shared investment in the future.

  • Texas has some of the highest uninsured rates in the nation, leaving too many families—especially in marginalized and rural communities—without reliable access to care. I support expanding Medicaid, strengthening rural hospitals, and investing in mental health services so every Texan can get the help they need close to home. Access to quality, affordable healthcare isn’t a privilege—it’s a necessity for a stronger, healthier Texas.

  • As someone who is licensed to carry, I understand the responsibilities that come with the right to carry, but the recent surge in gun violence shows that Texas needs reasonable safety measures. I support common-sense solutions like stronger background checks, red flag laws, and empowering local communities to address gun violence—all while upholding the rights of law-abiding citizens. Protecting our families and respecting responsible ownership go hand-in-hand to keep Texas safe.

  • Investing in public schools and workforce development is essential for Texas’ future and the strength of our communities. I support increasing teacher pay, boosting classroom funding, and standing firmly against efforts to privatize or defund public education. Prioritizing these issues will ensure every child has access to quality education and inspire voter turnout across the state.

  • Affordable housing is a critical need for Texas families facing rising costs and limited options. I support expanding funding for affordable housing projects, strengthening tenant rights, and implementing measures to prevent rapid and staggering rent increases. Building more affordable homes and protecting tenants ensures that everyone has a safe, stable place to call home and promotes healthier, more resilient communities.

  • Protecting free speech is essential to a healthy democracy and must remain a fundamental right for all Texans. I oppose efforts that seek to silence diverse voices or restrict open dialogue in our communities and public spaces.

Everyone deserves the freedom to express their ideas and beliefs without fear of censorship or retaliation.
